South Carolina

This is your humble correspondent writing tonight from Sumter South Carolina, a day after the stunning Republican primary. Wow! I am absolutely amazed by the margin of Gingrich’s victory. Some commentators are opining that Gingrich would be an easier candidate for Obama to beat. What I take away from this is the visceral disdain so many people have with the current president, that they don’t want a “nice guy- moderate” to run against him. They want to eviscerate him. People are so angry and fed up that they are boiling like South Carolina peanuts.
Who is really taking it to the president and the media? Who seems the most outraged? Who seems the most concerned for the future of the country? It appears to be Gingrich. South Carolinians were even willing to overlook marital infidelities, character flaws, and incredible hubris just to get back at the president who many, including me, feel is taking the country in the wrong direction on multiple fronts. Say what you might about Gingrich, but if South Carolina is a yardstick, which it regularly is, then the passion against this president has to be taken seriously. Don’t write Newt off yet. Lets see what happens in the coming states.
In that regard, I beg Rick Santorum to get out of the race. He is acting as Governor Huckabee did in 2008. He has no chance and is as marginalized as can be. Why is he continuing to do this? Is he a stalking horse for someone? Please leave with your dignity. The same goes for Ron Paul, although his constituency is unique and they will always follow him.
So on to Florida for the republicans. It’s up to you guys to help winnow this field. So go Sunshine Staters! Can’t wait to see what happens next.

Problem is Gingrich can’t win a general election. He can’t. If Obama is going to be defeated, some Democrats are going to have to vote against him. That’s just how the numbers stack up. And no Democrat I know would ever consider voting for the likes of Newt Gingrich.
I can’t imagine a faster track to four more years for Obama than to nominate a circus act like Newt Gingrich to run against him. With all his flipflopping (e.g. apparently FDR’s progressive style now makes him someone to be admired…that’s something new on the Newt front…) he simply can’t be taken seriously. This is getting very ugly.

Exactly what BVH said. Gingrich won’t win a general election. He’s too polarizing. And if he for some reason does win, I predict he’ll be a 1-termer that will put the Dems in office for 2 to 3 consecutive terms after that.

I think your analysis is flawed…. “South Carolinians were even willing to overlook marital infidelities, [...] just to get back at the president” Those were just the South Carolinans who would most likely not vote for Obama in any case… it’s the primary. Newt wasn’t running against Obama yet… it was against Romney. All that happened was the predictable outcome of a state where the Republicans are mostly evangelical, as opposed to N.H. where the base tends to be more moderate.

The Dems are on their knees (hypothetically, at least) every night praying it will be Newt.
I fear he would implode on the campaign trail. He says he is more mature (or maybe he said he has mellowed), but I doubt it. He has the same temperment as always, volatile and vengeful. This time I agree with BVH and kspml. Newt cannot win the general election against BHO. Disaffected voters are in no way attracted to him.
I beg Newt to get out of the race!

That’s an excellent point…the SC primary is not about Obama. It’s about two candidates for the Republican nomination. The results weren’t an attempt to “get back at the president”. They were a rejection of Romney’s message. Which is too bad, because the only shot at beating Obama in November is with a moderate candidate.
I heard an analysis today (on a Fox owned radio station, by the way) indicating that a victory by Gingrich would not only push Obama to another four years; it might even result in Republican losses across the board, in the House and Senate.
Yes, people know who Gingrich is, that’s for sure. And if he has any sense, he’ll see that, and drop out of the race soonest.

Re the general election and beating Obama: Newt Nope; Mitt Might.
