Topsy-Turvy

by on Feb.07, 2012, under Politics

It is 11:15 and i just received the second shock of the night. The first occurred at my local Republican caucus in Colorado Springs.  I live in El Paso County, one of the most conservative in the state. When it came time to speak for candidates, I got up and spoke for Mitt Romney. Then someone spoke for Rick Santorum. Then another spoke for Santorum; then another, and so on.  The number of vocal Santorum supporters outnumbered the Romney people by at least two to one. And they were very very passionate.

My hope was that the silent majority would be for Romney. When they announced the final  totals, it was Santorum 53; Romney 34; Gingrich 8; and Paul 7. I was stunned. My hope then  was that our precinct was an anomaly.  Unfortunately , the second shock just came when it was announced that Colorado went for Santorum by 40% to 35%. I am still trying to absorb what this means as I am sure many people are. Clearly this, plus Santorum wins in Minnesota and Missouri throws this primary race into a new dimension. Who would have thought it?

So Colorado spoke, and it sent a message that no one expected. Is Santorum really more electable? Is he more likable? Did evangelicals turn the tide for Santorum?  What does he bring that Romney doesn’t?  Lots of questions here, but not a lot of answers. Thoughts?

The same thing happened in our precinct:
    Santorum 42
    Romney 36
    Gingrich 6
    Paul 4
I too was hoping that it was an anomaly….
The statewide county map of results was interesting.

Romney is still in the overall lead for delegate count:
    Romney 107
    Santorum 45
    Gingrich 32
    Paul 8

Thoughts? The Republicans in some areas are getting what they have asked for: a hater to take on Obama. Not a politician or a qualified leader… a hater. This race isn’t about politics any more. Its about neo-conservative Evangelists versus the Democrats. Out of control.

Republicans….REPUBLICANS…would not back a knee-jerk terrorist like Santorum. This is the guy who accused the Catholic church of harboring liberalism in its seminaries, and thereby fostering the child abuse scandals we have all read about. I dont know what goes on in the seminaries and the odds are very good that I will never know. But I am certain beyond fear of contradiction that the seminaries do not encourage candidates for the priesthood to sexually molest children. Santorum is a reckless, loudmouth moron who claims to speak for Christians but actually speaks for the only the neo-Nazi fringe element. He should eventually be electro-shocked for his own good. What is going on out there in Missouri, Minnesota, and Colorado? Is there some kind of poison in the water?

I am not a supporter of Rick Santorum as I think some of his positions are too strident, and I think he will lead the republican party along path of Barry Goldwater into defeat. However, not sure I would characterize him as a knee jerk terrorist.

Then read some of the stuff he has written. You might change your views.

Take, for example, his comments about birth control. They are the kinds of comments we would expect to hear from a fundamentalist terrorist. I have to take back my previous statement that there is no faster way to put Obama back in office than to elect Newt Gingrich. There is a faster way. The faster way would be to nominate Rick Santorum. I dont care what your neighbors in Colorado think. Reality is reality. Santorum is poison. Move on.

I agree with BVH on this one. I don’t know about the “terrorist” comment, but the discussion prompted me to look of some of Santorum’s writings. If Santorum gets put forward as the nominee, I will probably not abstain (my former position was: Newt, vote for Obama against him–Santorum, abstain or token third party vote–Romney, vote Romney)… I will probably vote FOR Obama against Santorum. I will not vote for someone who believes social conservatism and “Christian” values are a central issue.
